Verdiales and Fandango: Where to Hear Málaga's Own Folk Music in the Montes de Málaga

Andalusian folk musicians festival

Before flamenco took the stage, the hills above Málaga had their own fandango: verdiales, played by ribboned pandas with violins and cymbals. Here is how to hear it, and what to expect at the big Fiesta Mayor in Puerto de la Torre on 28 December.

Málaga's music before the tablao

Most visitors meet Andalusian music in a city-centre tablao: a stage, a guitarist, a dancer and a fixed show time. Verdiales is different. It is the folk music of the hills behind Málaga, the Montes de Málaga, and it belongs to fiestas, roadside ventas and open-air contests rather than to theatres. It is loud, communal and built for dancing.

Musically, verdiales is a fandango, one of the old Andalusian forms that flamenco later drew on for the malagueña. A group of musicians is called a panda. A panda usually has a violin, guitars and lutes, a pair of small cymbals, a tambourine and castanets. A singer, the cantaor, delivers short, sharp verses over a rhythm that hardly lets up. Heading each panda is the alcalde, who carries a staff of office and names the cantaor; a flag-bearer walks beside him. The players wear hats piled with flowers, ribbons and small mirrors, which makes them easy to spot across a crowded field.

Three styles, three landscapes

There are three recognised styles, each named after the area it comes from:

  • Montes comes from the hills directly north and east of the city. Its area runs from Casabermeja and Arroyo Coche in the north, through the Montes de Málaga districts of Barranco del Sol, Verdiales, Roalabota, Chaperas, Jotrón and Lomillas, and east to Santo Pitar, Totalán and Benagalbón.
  • Almogía belongs to the inland town of the same name, west of the Montes.
  • Comares comes from the hilltop village in the Axarquía, to the north-east.

The differences show in the rhythm, in the playing and in how the dances are performed. After a few pandas you start to hear them. Locals in the crowd will tell you which style they prefer, and why the others are wrong.

Until the 1960s the pandas were centred on the hill farms of the Montes. When rural families moved into the city, the tradition moved with them to Málaga's outlying neighbourhoods. That is why the biggest verdiales event of the year now takes place in Puerto de la Torre, on the city's northern edge, and not in a mountain hamlet.

The big one: Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales, 28 December

The Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales is held every year on 28 December, the Día de los Santos Inocentes, in Puerto de la Torre. In 2026 it falls on a Monday. Recent editions have used the grounds of the Parque Andrés Jiménez Díaz.

The fiesta is a contest of song and dance. In 2024, 28 pandas took part: 12 in the Montes style, 10 from Almogía and 6 from Comares. Each style is judged separately, with prizes in these categories:

  • fiesta, the panda's overall performance
  • couple dance
  • trenzaillo dance
  • flag or bajín dance
  • best cantaor (singer)

In 2024 the music started at 12:00. Pandas usually keep playing informally around the grounds well after the judged performances finish. The 2026 start time, running order and number of pandas had not been published when this article was written. Local papers usually print the full running order in the days before the event.

Tips for the day

  • Arrive before noon. The fiesta draws families from all over the province, and the best spots near the stage go early.
  • Walk the grounds. Some of the best playing happens away from the stage, when pandas warm up or meet one another informally.
  • Dress for winter sun. Late December in Málaga can be bright and mild at midday but cools quickly in the afternoon.
  • Bring cash for food and drink stalls.

Previous editions were listed by the city without a ticket price. Confirm this for 2026, and check bus and parking options, on the city's official tourism site, visita.malaga.eu, nearer the date.

The solstice pilgrimage in the Montes

For the Montes pandas, the Puerto de la Torre fiesta is only part of a longer winter season. Around the winter solstice, pandas traditionally move through the hills by day and night, playing at ventas along the way. The route ends at the Ermita de Verdiales, the chapel of the Virgen de los Dolores, deep in the Montes.

This side of verdiales is informal and runs on local knowledge, so there is no published timetable. For a chance of catching it, have lunch at a venta in the Montes in the last days of December and ask the staff whether a panda is expected.

Other times of year to hear verdiales

Feria de Málaga (August). During the summer fair, pandas play in a dedicated verdiales caseta and on Calle Marqués de Larios in the centre. This is the easiest way to hear verdiales without leaving the city.

Benagalbón (September). The village of Benagalbón, in Rincón de la Victoria, holds the Concurso Tradicional de Verdiales estilo Montes. Its 31st edition, with eleven pandas plus invited pandas, took place on Saturday 19 September 2026. It is a smaller contest than the December fiesta, and worth noting in next year's diary.

Autumn. October and November have no fixed verdiales calendar. Pandas do play at local fiestas, venta lunches and neighbourhood events through the autumn, but these are rarely advertised far in advance. Watch the municipal agenda and ask at the ventas in the Montes.

Seeing the tradition in a museum

The Museo Unicaja de Artes y Costumbres Populares (Plaza Enrique García-Herrera 1) covers the folk culture of Málaga province and gives useful background on the rural life verdiales grew out of. Check its official site for its current opening status first.

Dates, times and programmes for all these events can change from year to year, so check before you go.
