Malaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol which is situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The city is a port in Andalucía, Southern Spain and it is known as being a major holiday resort. Just behind the harbour lies the inside of Malaga that surrounds the quarters of El Perchel, Lagunillas and La Trinidad.

The city is engulfed by the Mountains situated in the Southern base of the Axarquia hills and the two rivers, the Guadalhorce (on the right bank) and the Guadalmedina (on the left bank) flow near to Malaga


The population of the city has an average of 577,000 inhabitants (2007), and Malaga is the fifth largest province in Spain.

An estimated 6 million tourists flock each year to this wonderful sunny cosmopolitan city to explore the beautiful landscapes, remarkable architecture, great nightlife and fantastic seafood restaurants. Furthermore, Malaga houses most of the world-class golf courses which are scattered across the Costa del Sol or ‘Costa del Golf’ as some may say.

The city is not only well known for its sandy beaches but also for its rich history, additionally being the birthplace of the famous painter Pablo Picasso. The Picasso Museum opened in 2003 and has been highly praised by those who appreciate exceptional culture.


Malaga is planning to become a significant cultural centre of Europe. In 2004 the City council requested to be awarded with the title “European Culture Capital” for the year 2016, so this means the city has been working towards cultural improvements and will continue to do so in order to achieve this target.

The introduction of CAC Malaga (Center for Comtemporary Art) in 2003 has opened new possibilities for the cultural community and this will majorly contribute to Malaga’s objective in becoming a European cultural information point.


The city of Malaga comprises of three main tourist areas – Marques de Larios, Plaza de la Constitution and Calle de Granada which are well known for shopping, nightlife and cultural entertainment.


This modern city merges well with its historical background catering for all types of visitors, for those that wish to appreciate the past and those that want to discover the future.
